The “Octave” Effect: A Youth Development Philosophy

This basic musical principle is often the foundation for most young musicians. They quickly learn that musical notes support and build on one another. Much like the musical theory of octaves, the foundation of many Music programs is rooted in three C’s of youth development:

  • Connect
  • Collaborate
  • Create

Each of the three C’s work together to help your participants and Music program mentors succeed. These elements should be implemented from day one and continue in every aspect of the program.

You can apply the “three C’s” of Youth Development to many music projects, including:

  • Bands/ensembles/live performances
  • Recording projects
  • Creating music videos
  • Songwriting/lyric writing
  • Other Projects
